Turn Your Cover Letter Closing Into a Meeting

(The Friction-Free Ask)

Opening

You're wrapping up a cover letter after explaining why you're perfect for the role.

Bad: "I look forward to hearing from you soon about next steps."

They file it away and forget. Your closing did nothing.

Good: "I'd love to discuss how my 3 years in SaaS sales could help you hit your Q2 targets. I'm available Tuesday or Thursday at 2pm EST for a 20-minute call—does either work?"

They check their calendar immediately. You've made responding easy.

The difference? You removed every decision they had to make.

Claude Hopkins discovered that specificity sells. "Send me your thoughts" is vague. "Reply by Friday with your availability for a 30-minute call" removes friction. AI transforms weak closings into clear next steps.

The Principle

Most cover letters end with passive hope. "I look forward to hearing from you" puts all the work on them. They have to figure out what happens next, when, and how.

Strong closings make one thing crystal clear: exactly what you want them to do. Not "let's connect sometime" but "are you free Tuesday at 3pm?"

This isn't pushy—it's respectful of their time. You're doing the cognitive work so they don't have to. When someone reads a specific ask with a clear timeline, their brain can immediately say yes or suggest an alternative.

Why It Works

Hiring managers read dozens of cover letters. Most end the same way: "I look forward to hearing from you." That's not a call to action—it's a dead end.

When you suggest a specific time and duration, you're doing two things. First, you're showing you value their time by being precise. Second, you're making it ridiculously easy for them to respond.

"Does Thursday at 2pm work?" takes one second to answer. "Let me know when you're available" requires them to open their calendar, think about their week, and compose a response. Most people will do that later. Later becomes never.
